Thor and Loki: Blood Brothers Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjXO_rNblA4

Marvel have taken advantage of their global take-over of cinemas (Captain America is now No.1 movie in the US oddly enough – though less popular in Yemen) and begun to invest in some beautiful high end animation. By very precise direction they have given themselves scope enough to generate incredible visuals for this DVD release based on the book by the same name. Which frankly I’m hunting out.

Karakuri: The first Japanese Clockwork Robots

[vimeo http://www.vimeo.com/24412432 w=400&h=225]

Karakuri from Matthew Allard on Vimeo.

The Japanese have had more than a passing interest in robotics for generations. Well before the term robotics was coined the fine art of engineering Karakuri was developed. The patient and refined art of creating small clockwork models move in an almost unimaginably natural and refined way. Check this out to see a lady robot right a tiny Japanese symbol and then nod suggestively at you. Beautiful and a testament to fine artists and engineers and designers who slave everywhere to bring pieces of rare and unimaginable beauty.

Dropping Science: The Moon

Hello. Thought I’d try out some Science Dropping in the absence of Dan (who is currently recovering from his wedding yesterday. Congrats bro!!) It’s not that easy. I decided to start with our favourite subject, The Moon and found this overactive poppet.

Do you suffer from attention deficit disorder? If presented with a long, detailed and varied documentary fronted by a Top Gear presenter you find yourself drifting and would rather be pummelled with ‘Moon’ facts by a slightly self conscious teenager called Charlie who, I suspect, no matter how much he might deny this, is doing it to make girls like him then this is for you. Meet Charlie. With some really interesting facts about the Moon.

A Beyond The Bunker Wedding

I’m afraid there’s going to be a bit of a dip in content over this weekend but it’s not without reason. I will be getting married on Friday and shortly thereafter be heading off to Canada for a couple of weeks on my honeymoon. You needn’t fret as Steve will take good care of you while I’m gone but it does mean that The Extraordinary Adventures of Monsieur Poppaleux and Dropping Science will both be on hold until I get back. I was hoping to queue some stuff up but it turns out that the week before your wedding is a really bad week to be trying to write blogs about comics. If I do find time before I fly out, I’ll be sure to throw something up.

In the meantime feel free to enjoy the Monsieur Poppaleux archives as well as the Dropping Science ones.

Thank you for all the wonderful goodwill messages. I look forwards to coming back from the honeymoon refreshed and ready to roll into a very busy comic based autumn.

Take care and I’ll see you all when I’m a grown up.

Avengers goes Pre Production Design!!

Over at Marvel.com, The Avengers movie has gone to pre production / PR stunt levels with the full team being given an amazing full digital paint job. Featuring all of the Avengers (Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Maria Hill and Nick Fury). In it we’re getting some hints – including a familiar looking cloud based battle cruiser in the background. All things are looking good at this stage as fun is visibly being had and Marvel isn’t taking itself too seriously on this project. That should be its saving grace as the entertaining side of both Thor and Iron Man were what won them the fans. If Captain America lives up to the hype Marvel Entertainment’ll only have one more hurdle to get over. This beast. Now feast your eyes ’til they burp.

Lost Jedi: Coruscant

Jedi Master Pesco Oldbar

Jedi Master Pesco Oldbar is a seer and a true commander of the force. Present at the Temple in Coruscant as sage advisor to even the most prominent Jedi she acts as councillor. With the attack on the Temple, her only concern is the safety of the Padawan. While she is unable to save all of them, she manages to help some escape, thanks in part to the bravery of other Jedi as they try to facilitate their departure.

Jedi Archivist Downa Di Evlo

Never to be dismissed merely as an archivist, Downa Di Evlo’s knowledge of the inner defenses of the Jedi Temple allow her to defend the Hall of Knowledge and Jedi Padawan passing through. Thanks to occassional tutelage by Jedi Master Ca De Nas, Windu and Govija Kaoli she proves a dab hand with a lightsabre too.

Jedi Knight Jan Pa Pek

Jan Pa Pek is the first to try to stop Anakin Skywalker as ploughs through the Temple but not the first to fall before him. His fury at Anakin overwhelms his Jedi calm brefily which momentarily gives Anakin pause.

Jedi Knight Tomos Seers

Jedi Knight Tomos Seers is Jan Pa Pek’s partner in all missions. Having trained together since Padawan stage, the two of them have an intuitive sense of what the other will do in battle. Their combined fury halts Anakin Skywalker and the Clone army briefly, long enough for the more defenceless Jedi to slip through the cordon.

Padawan Freya

Padawan Freya is trapped in the Coruscant Temple and is only freed by Ca De Nas during his battle with Anakin Skywalker. Aided, unwillingly, towards escape, Freya attempts at every turn to help but is overwhelmed with the violence, destruction and brutality around her as the battle continues. Regardless of her condition if she escapes, she will carry the scars of the day in the Coruscant Temple for the rest of her life.

Paranormal Activity 3: Can You Get to the Other End of This Trailer?

Okay. Tester. Can you stare straight at the screen and reach the other end of this trailer? Test it out. The third instalment for Paranormal Activity, the first has caused women to try to pass through french doors without opening them before now so I am in awe of what they’ve pulled off. Still effectively hampered by it’s ’15’ certificate the first was a slow burning, low tech piece of low budget cinematic genius, the second has a nice house in it. This one has little girls. I hate little girls. In Horror films.

Moon Fan Art

One of the things that really amazed us about Moon is how much people love doing their own doodles of him. Almost no convention goes by without some exhibitor or other handing us a sketch of ol globehead and over time we’ve amassed a small but wonderful collection of them. Since we’re having a little summer break from conventions we thought it was high time to share a few of our favourites from the last few months.

Sketch given to us at Kapow! Comic con in April. To my shame, I can't remember who it was that drew it, but I love the scruffy look of the shirt.

A somewhat vintage looking sketch from the stunningly talented Nusha Amini

Matt from Moo & Keo was drawing superhero themed lion cubs at LFCC and decided to add Moon to the lineup

This one's actually by Steve, just to prove that he does do convention sketches from time to time.

We’ll try to throw up another collection of fan art later in the year. If you have a pic of Moon that you’d like to share, send it to us at btbcomics@gmail.com and we’ll do our best to post it up!

Dropping Science: Jedi-Bot

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuSCErmoYpY&w=640&h=390]

Forever the breeding ground for wonderful yet pointless tech experiments, university science departments have, since time immemorial created stuff that nobody can fathom but everyone secretly wants (well science departments and Apple). In this case, students from Stamford University have created a robot “Jedi” capable of sword fighting with a live human being. We’ve seen robots lightsaber fight with each other already of course, but apparently that’s too easy as the robots already know what each other is going to do (I suspect “easy” is something of a relative term). With this particular battle droid, the bot is actually capable of sensing the movements of its human opponent and altering its strategy to compensate. It performs this wondrous feat with the aid of…you guessed it…an X-Box Kinnect. Microsoft it seems, while failing to create a truly earth shattering gaming experience, are succeeding quite nicely in bringing about the birth of Skynet.

The force is strong with this bot.
