Booster Gold is Coming to TV!

Christmas has come early this year! NBCUniversal owned SyFy channel announced today that it has begun work on a TV pilot based on everyone’s time-hopping super star, Booster Gold!

Booster Gold is a story about a washed up athlete from the far future named Michael Jon Carter. When his life falls off the tracks in his own time Carter steals a load of gadgets from the super hero museum and travels back to the 21st century in order to become a super hero known as Booster Gold. Unlike other super heroes however, Booster is far more interested in landing lucrative marketing deals than he is with saving people in distress. But, as is the way with such stories, events conspire that force Booster to step up and turn from Super Douche to Super Hero.

He also has a flying robot butler.

According to Hollywood Reporter the has tapped Fringe writer Andrew Kreisberg to produce a one hour script, presumably to go into production some time next year.

Obviously it’s very early days yet. American TV shows growing from concept to commission have only a slightly better mortality rate than sea turtles these days, however the character’s solid, the network is the right pick and the writer seems like a good choice. Also Booster is meant to be ludicrously shiny so if they wind up with the same costume designer as the failed wonder woman pilot it won’t be a major problem.

Time will tell.

Pulp Trailer – A Movie About The Men Behind The Superheroes

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6QHmTvrYkE&w=853&h=480]

A good friend of ours (indeed the artistic basis for one of Moon’s central characters) plays the villain in this upcoming British made movie about comic book creators. If you go to cons you may have seen them sneaking about with their cameras and it’s a joy to see that the film is almost ready for release. Here’s the official blurb:

“Tony Leary, the hapless owner of Junk Comics, is gearing up for one last roll of the dice. His new superhero title, The Sodomizer, launches at the International Comic Show. And if life wasn’t complicated enough, Tony is drafted by the police to identify another comic company that is laundering money for a gang of Geordie criminals. Aided by his trusty geek sidekicks, Rick and Keith, Tony must defy the odds if he is to become a real life hero.”

There’s no release date just yet but the movie looks like a tonne of fun. Check out www.pulpthemovie.com for more details.

Dropping Science: Onwards to the Edge!

You all know I love space and you all know I love autotune so this week’s post should be a no-brainer.   Symphony of Science have created this musical celebration of our solar system and the importance of continuing to explore the cosmos. Featuring scientists Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Cox and Carolyn Porco as well as some stunning imagery from recent TV series, it’s a wonderfully inspiring piece of work and one that will keep me smiling all day.

The Extraordinary Tales of Monsieur Poppaleux #31 – We Are What We Are

In 1993, famous Belgian author and spring onion connoisseur, Dr Jean-François Bacharach created a series of books for children. The aim of the project was to use state of the art digital technology to educate and inform on a wide range of topics from maths and theology to poetry and tennis. Using pioneering clip-art techniques, he produced a staggering portfolio of work that continues to be widely distributed in schools across the world and Belgium. Sadly DrBacharach himself was eventually imprisoned due to his being ahead of his time and because he killed a quite staggering number of cats. However his work lives on here at the Bunker! We have secured the entirety of Dr Bacharach’s monumental work and now present it to you. C’est formidable!

Next week: The redemption of Monsieur Poppaleux!

Last Chance to Pre-Order Tales of the Fallen

Tomorrow morning Steve and I will be off to join several other members the Unseen Shadows team at the Thought Bubble Festival in Leeds. This means that you have just a day or so left to pre-order your copy of Tales of the Fallen.

Tales of the Fallen is a collection of 4 comics by some of the hottest creators in UK (and Irish and South African) comics. A tour de force of action adventure, it tells the stories of 4 characters from Barry Nugent’s hit novel/comic/audio-drama/web-series Unseen Shadows. It also features tonnes of bonus material, including an introduction by TV’s Jonathan Ross!

They are murderers, martyrs and mercenaries in the no-man’s-land between adventure and crusade – soldiers of fate and fierce honour, bound together in mystery, darkness and blood. Their enemies are shadows haunting the outermost borders of a darkening world, and as night approaches the shadows grow long.

They are the Fallen, and these are their stories.

The book will almost certainly sell out over the weekend (the level of interest already has been crazy) and so unless you want to wait for a second printing, you need to get over to the Unseen Shadows website and pre-order the copy right now! In return you will not only be one of the first to read the book but you will also get it for the special price of just £8.50 and you get a free digital version of the book thrown in too!

If you’re going to Thought Bubble, be sure to check out the Unseen Shadows panel on Sunday for a behind the scenes look at how Tales of the Fallen came about and where it’s all going next.

See you at Thought Bubble!

ALL The Power Rangers Team Up For 35th Anniversary

Those of us of a certain age remember fondly the hours of watching poorly dubbed Japanese space ninjas battle bizarre aliens and for those people a real treat is in store. For the 35th (yes 35th!) anniversary of Super Sentai (the show from which Power Rangers is derived) the shows creators decided to go all in and filmed a scene in which every singe Ranger from the past 35 years teams up to fight…er…something.

If you don’t cheer when the Green Ranger makes an appearance then you wasted your youth.

Moon Returns to Kapow Comic Con!

We’re very happy to announce that Beyond the Bunker will be returning to the Kapow Comic Con next May!

Launched by Kick Ass/Ultimates writer Mark Millar earlier this year, Kapow has already secured its status as one of the UKs top comic cons. It’s a grand day out and (unlike some other cons) is designed to appeal to both hardcore fans and casual fans alike. It’s a fantastic event and we’re really excited to be a part of it.

The Kapow website is in the process of being updated ready for the event but keep one eye right here on the bunker for updates on the guest list and other Kapow related news!

Kapow 2011 at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London

See you there!

How to Steal in Skyrim

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt5aUdijAN8&w=640&h=480]

There’s about a million reasons why so many people (myself included) love Elder Scrolls games, but one of the silliest ones has always been the art of finding weird bugs that allow you to do crazy things. In Oblivion it was hiding things in your dead horse like some kind of medieval Han Solo. In Skyrim, it seems that the new game in town is the delicate art of misdirection.

Lateral thinking thieves. We salute you.

Dropping Science: Want To See A Dam Explode?

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LxMHmw3Z-U&w=853&h=480]

The Condit Dam has sat happily on the White Salmon river in Washington for nearly 100 years. Sadly though, the old workhorse has become vastly outdated compared to modern dams and the company that owns the facility recently decided that it was simply too expensive to remain operational. This is very sad for fans of massive concrete water retainers, but fantastic news for fans of stuff blowing up.

After engineers planted explosives throughout the dam, National Geographic settled in with a set of time-lapse cameras and watched as the entire reservoir drained in just 2 hours. The rest of the dam will now be taken down and the river returned to its natural state.
