Some Thoughts on The Great Gatsby Trailer

The Great Gatsby is (and has been since I first read it at the age of 17) my favourite book by some distance. With that in mind I’ve been rather curious about the latest attempt to bring Fitzgerald’s great American novel to the screen. This time around the project is helmed by Baz Luhrmann (Romeo & Juliet) and stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role and if the trailer is anything to go by then things seem to be on track.

I’m still not totally convinced that Gatsby needs to be a movie and part of me can’t help but think that DiCaprio is too self assured to work as the lost, delusional Gatsby but I like all of Baz Luhrmann’s films (yes, including Australia. Australia’s great, bum off) and I’ll watch pretty much anything with DiCaprio in (miscast or not). The idea of casting Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway is an interesting one and from the trailer, looks to be a pretty sound decision. Maguire is a great character actor who deserves to be thought of as more than “that guy who played Spider-Man”.

The one thing that baffles me is why on earth, given the largely non-action based story, the movie is in 3D. Most likely it has something to do with studio pressure and the fact that Luhrmann wants to have a bash at it before the horse finally collapses. I would suggest that this is an example of 3D running faster, spreading it’s arms father and hoping for one fine morning…but that would make me a wanker.

Gatsby is out later this year.

Oh and if you want to see a truly great (no pun intended) Gatsby esque film then you should watch Stephen Poliakoff’s Friends and Crocodiles. It’s not a version of the Gatsby story per-say but it has so many parallels that if you like Gatsby then you’ll love it.

Anchorman 2 Trailer: F.U. Law of Diminishing Returns (and San Diego)

The second official teaser trailer for ‘Anchorman 2′ starring Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner and Luke Wilson. Ron Burgundy and the news crew reunite for more laughs. “This time there will be sub-machine guns and boobies”. Whammie!

There’ll be no boobs!! Not if it’s anything like the original. But there might be fights between them and the Channel 6 News Team. Only question is; where’s Veronica Corningstone?

Skyfall Trailer

It’s been a while since Bond was on our screen. While Casino Royale left everyone wanting more – it’s fair to say that the follow up cooled attitudes. The contrivance of a hotel filled with explosive gas as a finale for a Bond movie stretched things almost as far as the super car-bonnet surfing glacier space laser scene from Dire another Day. But this looks like cleaner, slicker, tougher stuff. Sam Mendes, director of comic adaptation Road to Perdition (featuring Daniel Craig) has a history of crisply shot violence and misunderstood masculinity. So nothing like this then.

Worth a look I’d say.

Guardians of the Galaxy Movie? : Avengers meet the Guardians of the Galaxy!!

We here at Beyond the Bunker are convinced that Rocket Raccoon is an irresistable possibility for Marvel to not make into a movie. The combination of Armoured smart talker (Peter Quill), uncertain galactic powerhouse (Captain Marvel), mysterious magic man (Warlock), Giant Man Tree (Groot) and a cockney Raccoon seems like blockbuster gold to me and the various plot lines that we’re seeing build up are looking like they might suggest at least a cameo for this lot in the next four movies released by Marvel.

This little clip goes some way towards pointing in that direction but are our predictive powers maybe over stretching a little? ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ says Iron Man in a voice that suggests he’s about to be dragged away by his frat buddies to a kegger on the other side of campus ‘like Space Avengers…’

Yes, Tony Stark (script writer of this episode) like the biggest grossing movie ever made …. only in space…… hmmmmm.

If I get a chance to talk to Joe Quesada this weekend I’m asking for a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Once, long ago, I was pretty reserved about this stuff….

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis Hit the Trail in Campaign

The official trailer for ‘The Campaign’ starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as political rivals in a race for Congress in a North Carolina district. Ferrell plays incumbent congressman Cam Brady who makes a major public goof that forces a bunch of wealthy CEOs to put up a rival for his seat in Congress in the form of Galifianakis’ Marty Huggins, the director of the local Tourism Center.

Ferrell’s comic turns are hit and miss at times and Galifianakis has never really matched that first global smack in the face that was The Hangover but this pitches them more positively than in previous incarnations and kinda to their strengths. It’s also not a sports movie which is an obvious plus in Will Ferrell’s corner. Add to that punching babies in the face this might be a winner.

Claim the High Ground If You Like but Expendables 2 Looks Like Good Ol’ ’80s Awesome!!

It doesn’t matter that they steal a joke from The Losers right at the beginning of the trailer! It doesn’t matter that the three biggest names in the movie should be taking pension cheques! All that matters is that the Expendables are back and they are carrying massive weaponry and only encouraged by Expendables 1. I love intelligent movies, I’ll sit and watch Thank you for Smoking and Sideways ’til the cows go 3D – but bottom line, I grew up in the Eighties and Nineties and I think there’s room for indiscriminate gunfire and unnecessarily large explosions on the cinema screen. The fact that it pitches Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme against each other only sweetens the dopey deal.

The sight of Arnie and Brucie driving around in a Smartcar with an automatic machine gun only sweetens it further. I’m not saying it’ll be my favourite movie of 2012 but by god it fulfills a very deep desire to see things explode a lot. There’s not enough bloody minded carthasis on cinema screens. How are schoolboys going to grow up wanting to off every mutha… in the room if we don’t give them this? I don’t need to justify it to you. Just watch the trailer.

Amazing Spider-man Trailer 2: Peter Parker Revealed as wise cracking as the real thing (also some Lizard)

There is a little retiscence in getting overly excited about the New Amazing Spider-man movie in me until now. The last thing anyone needs is another creation movie (everyone knows it; it’s the lore of the street now like Superman getting it on with Lois Lane and Batman’s an orphan; Peter Parker got bitten by a radioactive Spider). However, whatever initial fear was developed in the previous trailers and teasers, Andrew Garfield as Spider-man being one of them – this trailer begins to torch them.

Tobey Macguire was a great Spider-man but couldn’t knock out a Spider-quip in the way that Andrew Garfield clearly can. Oddly, it was almost an aspect of the wall-crawler many had forgotten following the first three movies. Spider-man is a wise-ass. To deal with the fear and insecurities, Parker always through out quirky one liners (something that has made other Marvel characters – notably fellow Avenger Wolverine – want to kill him).

But it was that detail that perhaps we missed in the Sam Raimi trilogy (excellent though the first two were). When the mask went on, it was only Spider-man.

If this trailer’s anything to go by we’ll be seeing Parker under the suit during the massively expensive fight scenes.

Batman ‘Utterly Gay’ according to Batman Writer Grant Morrison.

In what is one more in a series of eloquently outspoken statements about comics (and his involvement in them) Batman writer Grant Morrison has described the superhero as “utterly gay”. The acclaimed comics writer, who has been writing Batman for DC since 2006′s ‘Batman And Son’ storyline, has said that while character is straight, a homosexual sensibility is “built into” the concept. He told Playboy: “He’s very plutonian in the sense that he’s wealthy and also in the sense that he’s sexually deviant. Gayness is built into Batman.’

“I’m not using gay in the perjorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There’s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he’s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay.” Morrison added that this was part of the appeal: “I think that’s why people like it. All these women fancy him and they all wear fetish clothes and jump around rooftops to get to him. He doesn’t care – he’s more interested in hanging out with the old guy and the kid.”

Batman’s next big screen outing The Dark Knight Rises is released this summer. Watch the trailer below.

Major (but awesome) Spoiler about the Avengers Villain

Back in November, we wrote an article about whether or not Thanos was secretly the true Avengers movie bad guy. It was thrown together with ideas of Whedon’s natural layering of threats in previous projects, Marvel’s cavalier attitude to plots and introductions of unusual and exciting characters and Thanos himself being cool as all hell and associated with cubes. The whole article effectively gave reason after reason as to why it should be true then I crapped out in the last paragraph and said no probably not.

But word is beginning to spread that ol’ purple radiator face does indeed make an appearance in the Avengers movie. Also, that shots showing Loki working alongside the Avengers (Oh Loki, when will you ever learn) suggest that things go awry and that a dark force more powerful than the God of Mischief intervenes. This, I believe, ain’t Thanos but we have recieved a comment from someone fortunate enough to see the Avengers Assemble claiming that Thanos is right there at the end of the credits. Other sources are saying he’s perrenially involved in Loki’s plot though not the prevailing threat of the film.

Nevertheless, if Thanos is in the all important final reel at the end of the credits then Marvel is beefing him up for something. Io9.com was mentioning the other day a veiled reference by a Marvel Exec about a feature involving a Raccoon and a tree and Marvel Galaxies saw Thanos versus Nova, Gladiator et al just last year. This points to an incredibly promising possibility. That Marvel intend to move their new features further out perhaps than anyone would expect and push out a Galactic movie. Guardians of the Galaxy: the Movie anyone?

The worst part is we had Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning right in front of us just this weekend and all I talked to Andy Lanning about was what ink to use and I spoke to Dan and his lovely wife about embarrassing myself in front of Simon Pegg at a Star Wars Con I was working at. I was priding myself on my restraint after embarrassing myself in front of Quitely a year ago (something Dan brings up whenever he can and will glefully tell you if asked) but this time fanboy bloghead would’ve actually helped!! Avengers: Thor Versus Iron Man and Cap takes a hit (*Spoiler Alert)

It seems almost like Marvel are nervous. Gotta wonder whether the lacklustre coverage of John Carpenter (seen it now – it’s not that great) has the all watching Disney ordering teasers galore. So here are two – both a little bit of a shame as they’d be great just to watch as part of a film but hey – I’m an adult – I can take it. If however, you don’t want to see details of the upcoming Avengers movie look away before you watch the video directly above this warning. D’oh.

Here’s a worrying spoiler. Captain America takes a hit to the stomach from a dead thing’s laser. Can’t help but feel that might go nasty.
