Band of Butchers

Unseen Unseen Shadows Sketch : Secret Clancy Wallencheck Artwork

It’s been a while since the Unseen Shadows Anthology (featuring Clancy Wallencheck:Band of Butchers, Napoleon Stone: Fragments of Fate, Stephanie Connisbee: Operation Solomon and Reverend: Wrath of God). The next anthology is in the process of being completed – this time featuring Ben ‘The Hand’ Ashodi (from FH 1) and Nathan Ash (written by our very own Dan Thompson).

At the time of Unseen Shadows I drew a scene based on Dan’s writing. As I’ve been looking through some of my old artwork I found that sketch and thought I’d stick it up for your perusal. First time Dan will have seen it too. Surprise, Danno!!

New Unseen Shadows Project in the Works

Morning everyone,

Those of you who follow me on twitter will know that I’ve been having a bit of a moan lately about how as a writer you’re never allowed to talk about the stuff you’re working on. It’s a one of the drawbacks of being at the very start of what is always a very long creative process but there are very good reasons for it. Many projects that get started go nowhere and if I went around every script that I started work on then you’d come to believe that we have an upcoming catalogue comparable to Marvel. 90% the stuff I start writing goes in the bin or goes back into the closet to be brought out at a later date and until one of those ephemeral ideas begins to coalesce into something more substantial, I don’t see any benefit in talking about it publicly.

Which is all a rather round about way of saying that I probably have another new comic coming out later this year. Since Christmas I’ve been working on a new Unseen Shadows one shot for the follow up anthology to Tales of the Fallen (available from all good stockists and this one) and it looks like it’s far enough along that you can all know about it now. The script went off to Unseen Shadows editor, Barry Nugent, last week and, pending a few edits we should be looking for an art team in the near future.

The comic itself is not a direct follow up to last year’s Band of Butchers but rather will feature a tale about Unseen Shadows’ front man, Napoleon Stone chasing down his old mentor in a story of friendship, betrayal and big fights in exotic locations. It’s been a real thrill to get a crack at writing one of the Unseen Shadows A-listers and, as always, Barry has proven to be a very fine editor indeed. The man knows his universe but he’s not afraid to let others play in it, the perfect combination to my mind.

I’m now going to go back to doing that annoying “not talking about the project” thing as we need to secure the rest of the dream team that will bring this book together. As soon as I know more about stuff like release dates etc, I promise that I shall let you know. For now be content to know that if you dug Tales of the Fallen then you will be smiling even more by the end of 2012.

Take care,

D

(I’m also working on a film project right now…but I can’t talk about that.)

Geek Planet Online Reviews Tales of the Fallen

We’ve been pretty quiet on the Unseen Shadows front since the release of Tales of the Fallen last November. There’s still plenty going on at the publisher and we are most certainly involved in some of it, but it’s mostly stuff we’re not allowed to talk about just yet. Still, Tales of the Fallen is still out there and seems to be gradually winning more and more fans. Geek Planet Online ran an excellent review of the book this week and I thought I’d share a link to it here. If you’re thinking about picking up the book, this review gives you a nice overview of what to expect. Here’s a brief excerpt:

“The book as a whole achieves its mission of telling good stories for newcomers while offering background to long term fans. People going in cold should find enough to entice them to seek out Fallen Heroes. It will be interesting to see what else comes from the Unseen Shadows stable in the future.”

Band of Butchers Artist Nominated for ICN Award!

It’s with great delight that I’m able to report that Band of Butchers artist Rob Carey has been nominated for Best Mainstream Published Artist in the 2011 ICN awards! ICN honours creators and comics of Irish origin and is a hell of an accolade  to be nominated for.

Deus Ex by Rob Carey with colours by Alwyn Talbot

Having worked with Rob on Band of Butchers I can honestly say that it’s an honour thoroughly well deserved. People throw the term “one to watch” around far too much but in all honesty if there is any justice in the world then you will be seeing a LOT of Rob Carey in the future. He’s a joy to work with as an artist and his work is a joy to behold for a reader. You just have to take a look at some of his work here in this post to see what I mean.

Cover for Band of Butchers

It’s not an easy fight though. Rob’s in a category that includes the likes of Nick Roche & Alan Nolan and so we at the Bunker are asking (nay demanding/begging depending on your reaction to such things) that you head to the VOTING PAGE and vote for Rob Carey to walk away with the title! If nothing else, it’ll add a few quid to the value of that signed Band of Butchers comic you’re planning on picking up at Thought Bubble.

Best of luck Rob. The Bunker’s behind you 100%.

Tales of the Fallen: Band of Butchers Preview

As many of you know, Steve and I have a couple of new books coming out in November. “Tales of the Fallen” is a set of four one-shot comics based on the Unseen Shadows series of books by Barry Nugent.  To celebrate the upcoming release of the comics, we’re going to be previewing one of them each week in October. If you want to be one of the only people in the world to pick up signed copies of Tales of the Fallen you’ll need to buy a ticket to the Thought Bubble convention in Leeds so you can be there for the grand launch. Enjoy the previews:

Band of Butchers

Dan Thompson (Writer), Paul Mclaren (Lettering), Rob Carey (Art), Vicky Stonebridge (colours)

Clancy Wallencheck is a very bad man – the commander of an elite team that have nothing to live for and a whole lot of people to kill.

From the mountains of Pakistan to the waters of Venice, there have been a thousand corpses in Clancy’s life.

This is the story of the one that mattered.

Band of Butchers Line Art Completed!

Morning chaps,

I am pleased to say that I just woke up to yet another delivery of incredible art from Rob Carey. What makes this delivery different is that it is the final page of our upcoming Unseen Shadows comic: Band of Butchers! That means that the book is just a few days away from being totally finished and I could not be more excited. It now falls to Vicky Stonebridge to wrap up the last few pages of colouring and Paul McLaren to add the last few pages of lettering. All being well we’re expecting it to be in “Bullwhip” Barry Nugent’s (and yes, that is the first and only time I’m using that nickname, Barry) hands within the next week or so making it seem highly likely that we should hit our desired release date of November 19th (Thought Bubble 2011) with time to spare.

Not only has Rob created interior art that will blow you away, he’s also designed the cover for both this book and the main Tales of the Fallen anthology (within whose pages BoB will make its home).

I cannot stress how happy I am to have been a part of this project. The team we’ve assembled here are a truly exceptional group of people and the book that we’ve produced is going to blow your socks off.

Since I can’t show you the last bit of art from Rob (for obvious spoiler reasons), here’s the very first piece he did. A stunning concept sketch of the not-quite-hero of our tale, Clancy Wallencheck.

You can read a 4 page preview of Band of Butchers by going to the main UNSEEN SHADOWS SITE and you can buy tickets to Thought Bubble and be one of the first people to read it by CLICKING HERE.

Band of Butchers Colours

A couple of weeks back I posted up Rob Carey’s pencils & inks for page one of Clancy Wallencheck: Band of Butchers. Well, since that time the very talented Vicky Stonebridge has been hard at work on the colours and it is now my great pleasure to show off a little of her work. I continue to be blown away by the talent of everyone involved in this comic and I really can’t wait for you dear bunkerites to have a chance to read it. Head over the the UNSEEN SHADOWS OFFICIAL SITE for some more colours as well as details on how YOU can be involved in the upcoming Unseen Shadows Audio Drama.

Band of Butchers is out in November.

(I’m afraid that there is no Monsieur Poppaleux this week. Charles Crimpsphincter has been arrest on allegations of phone hacking and the Poppaleux archives have been seized as evidence. Oddly enough Monsieur P himself remains at large.)

First Page From Band of Butchers

I held off on posting this for a while because I wanted to give the other guys a chance to show it off, but with Page 2 already in my inbox and preliminary colours starting to roll in as well, I think it’s about time to show it off. The pencils and inks here are the work of Rob Carey and I hope that you’re as excited about them as I am.

Band of Butchers is a one shot comic, written by myself, which details the early career of mercenary, Clancy Wallencheck. For regular updates on the project keep coming back here or check out the UNSEEN SHADOWS WEBSITE.

Steve P returns to Beyond the Bunker. All hands to the lifeboats…

Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to drop away my involvement in Beyond the Bunker (not including MCM whicxh was an awesome success) and I’ve been trying to get back to the level of involvement I had before.

Mr D Thompson Esquire has handled things beautifully in recent weeks and held the Beyond the Bunker banner aloft with credibility and style that you would expect from a man that represents in so many ways the best elements of both man and lady (he can’t fight for love nor money but that rarely comes up). However, the pressure is now decidedly off him.

After an unfortunate hiatus in which I dealt with rampaging demon hordes and traveled to a distant Japanese monastery to practice the zen art of turning mere paper and computer pages into works of fine art and design, I have returned and quite frankly I can’t wait to start showing you what’s coming. With the enormous goliath that is the Unseen Shadows project being formed outside of your vision as we speak; which incorporates 4 central characters from the Fallen Heroes Universe into collected 1 shots, plus the veritable leviathan that is Moon 2 waiting quietly in the corner for launch at a soon to be announced date – much is going to take place in the coming weeks and I am proud to say that Beyond the Bunker is in the centre of it.

Now, partly due to recent events and partly because there is now longer no course of action left open to us, myself, Gat Melvyn and Iv Matilla are going to attempt something of a coup. Now, if I say its getting done – it’s done. I am no longer Steve Penfold, Bum Artist. I am Steve Penfold. Zen Pen Ninja, Fourth Dan. If you stand in the way you are gonna get covered in ink.

As the stunt rider says to the expectant white trash jail bait…

‘Watch this…’

Watch here over the next few weeks to see if I make good on my great big, grand plans. (I will).

To those who know who they are – I plan to make you proud. Even if it kills me.
