OVERLOAD 1 out now!!

Overload 1 was released this weekend at Kapow. Martin Conaghan of Fallen Heroes and Burke and Hare fame has jump started his new anthology title with a messy, darkened, pulpy bang. More of a squish really as the stories featured take you to the dark side of Human experience. Ignorance, psychosis, paranoia and political satire bleed out of every panel. I had no idea what I was getting involved in. I do now.

Issue #1 of OVERLOAD features a stunning cover by Graeme Neil Reid (2000AD, Judge Dredd Megazine, The Beano) depicting the Iron Lady in all her zombified glory, attacking the good people of London – taken from the inaugural issue’s headline story ‘Primus Inter Pares’ (“First Among Equals”) – which sees the UK overcome by the dead returning from the grave and former prime ministers attempting to re-take 10 Downing Street. Written by Gordon Rennie (Judge Dredd, Doctor Who, Dept of Monsterology) and Emma Beeby with art by newcomer Eoin Coveney, it’s a ‘biting’ satire on the country’s current political decline at the hands of the Conservative/Liberal Democrat alliance.

Omen (1 of 6 stories featured in OVERLOAD 1. Written by Geoffrey D Wessell and Drawn by… well .,,, me .. Steve Penfold….

Also featured in issue #1 is ‘Comort’ written by Dave Cook and Gary Crutchely (2000AD), a short story about the things in life we turn to when the chips are down.

‘Staring Into The Eye Of A Blackbird, You Can See The Things He Likes And The Things He Doesn’t’, written by Martin Hayes with art by Graeme Howard depicts the tale of a lonely young man whose existence disturbed by dreams of a mysterious blackbird that watches his every move…

Cy Dethan (Cancertown) scripts ‘Open Source’ with art by Aaron Moran in a story about protect something precious by keeping it hidden in plain sight…

While writer Matt Gibbs and James Reekie (The Ballad of Frank Satre) deliver the haunting ‘Otherworld Sailor’ – a tale about ancient religion and a shocking visitation.

OVERLOAD is intended to be a regular black and white anthology title showcasing the work of established talent, while introducing some new creators to the comics industry.

All material is creator-owned, with Overload reserving first reprint rights and some digital publishing rights. All deals are non-exclusive. We do not accept completed stories which have not been pre-approved. We do accept unsolicited idea submissions, but not unsolicited scripts. Submissions are by invite-only. Tales of the Fallen: Wrath of God Preview

As many of you know, Steve and I have a couple of new books coming out in November. “Tales of the Fallen” is a set of four one-shot comics based on the Unseen Shadows series of books by Barry Nugent.  To celebrate the upcoming release of the comics, we’re going to be previewing one of them each week in October. If you want to be one of the only people in the world to pick up signed copies of Tales of the Fallen you’ll need to buy a ticket to theThought Bubble convention in Leeds so you can be there for the grand launch. Enjoy the previews:

Wrath of God

Cy Dethan (Writer), Steve Penfold (Artist) Gat Melvin (Colours), Nic Wilkinson (Lettering)

The Reverend: a holy weapon forged in tragedy and flame – a murderous martyr whose cold judgement strikes with the force of a vengeful God. Despair, for the Reverend walks among you. He is the right hand of vengeance. He is Wrath.

Unseen Shadows: Creative Teams confirmed…

Getting back into the game I’m already playing catch up. Unseen Shadows is now well underway with pages already in for Stephanie Connisbee: Operation Solomon and Clancy Wallencheck: Band of Butchers. Scripts will be ready soon for Napoleon Stone and the Fragments of Fate. Cy finished Reverend: Wrath of God some time ago. Myself, Gat and Barry are agreed it can be done and if it is – then Wrath of God may well be our proving grounds.

We have a long way to go but we’ve got our driving caps on and the engine is revving. Check back here for updates every Thursday about progress on all Unseen Shadows and Fallen Heroes titles…. Cheers

Steve P returns to Beyond the Bunker. All hands to the lifeboats…

Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to drop away my involvement in Beyond the Bunker (not including MCM whicxh was an awesome success) and I’ve been trying to get back to the level of involvement I had before.

Mr D Thompson Esquire has handled things beautifully in recent weeks and held the Beyond the Bunker banner aloft with credibility and style that you would expect from a man that represents in so many ways the best elements of both man and lady (he can’t fight for love nor money but that rarely comes up). However, the pressure is now decidedly off him.

After an unfortunate hiatus in which I dealt with rampaging demon hordes and traveled to a distant Japanese monastery to practice the zen art of turning mere paper and computer pages into works of fine art and design, I have returned and quite frankly I can’t wait to start showing you what’s coming. With the enormous goliath that is the Unseen Shadows project being formed outside of your vision as we speak; which incorporates 4 central characters from the Fallen Heroes Universe into collected 1 shots, plus the veritable leviathan that is Moon 2 waiting quietly in the corner for launch at a soon to be announced date – much is going to take place in the coming weeks and I am proud to say that Beyond the Bunker is in the centre of it.

Now, partly due to recent events and partly because there is now longer no course of action left open to us, myself, Gat Melvyn and Iv Matilla are going to attempt something of a coup. Now, if I say its getting done – it’s done. I am no longer Steve Penfold, Bum Artist. I am Steve Penfold. Zen Pen Ninja, Fourth Dan. If you stand in the way you are gonna get covered in ink.

As the stunt rider says to the expectant white trash jail bait…

‘Watch this…’

Watch here over the next few weeks to see if I make good on my great big, grand plans. (I will).

To those who know who they are – I plan to make you proud. Even if it kills me.

Please Stand by… Normal function will resume soon….

Beyond the Bunker has been a little bereft this week we admit. There is a simple matter as to why… and we ask you to bear with us. The simple reason is this – things is beginning to move. We can assure you that in the background mighty cogs are finally beginning to heave into crotchety life and I can assure you that your good selves – the intrepid Beyond the Bunker adventurer will be the one to benefit. As things have progressed the existing content for Beyond the Bunker seems a little below par so myself and Dan will be reviewing the situation, reorganising and a new, brighter, sharper future for Beyond the Bunker will become clear very soon.

Things are moving quite dramatically with Moon (particularly following the success of the Moon Launch 2 weeks ago) and in particular Fallen Heroes which is expanding dramatically (more news about that here very, very soon) plus there is more as new concepts and scripts are being written and developed in the background. Its just that me and Dan haven’t sat down to discuss how best to showcase all this yet and as soon as we do I assure you you’ll have something really special to look at.

Semper Procedens, Bunker Lovers. Semper Procedens.

Dan Announced as Writer for Fallen Heroes One Shot

Evening chaps,

Apologies for the flagrant use of the third person in that blog title, wasn’t sure what else to call this post. We’ve been teasing you guys with promises of big announcements for a while now so it’s really nice that I can finally reveal one of them at long last.

Earlier this week I agreed a deal with Barry Nugent (author of the Fallen Heroes novel and mastermind of the whole venture) to write a one shot comic based on one of the characters from the Fallen Heroes comic book series. The book will be entitled “Clancy Wallencheck: Band of Butchers” and (as the name might imply) it’ll be all about FH’s resident gun-for-hire and professional badass, Clancy Wallencheck.

Clancy makes his appearance in the very first issue of the comic (he’s even on the cover) and he’s a pretty major player all the way through the story. In “Band of Butchers” we’ll be diving headlong into the psyche of one of the world’s most dangerous men as well as revealing the secret origins of Clancy’s elite mercenary unit “Blacklight”.

Clancy's the one on the right. You can tell he's a badass because he has a beard. Almost all people with beards can kill you. Fact.

The book will be out sometime later in the year and will be available as part of the “Tales of the Fallen” anthology where it will sit alongside stories by Pete Rogers, Richmond Clements & Cy Dethan. I’m extremely excited to be working alongside creators of this caliber and to have a crack at a character as interesting as Clancy. Obviously there’s still a lot of bits and bobs to work out but rest assured that we’ll keep you as up to date as we can over the coming months.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go research pictures of guns…lots of guns.
