New Moon Flyer

There’s no way around it sometimes you just need to advertise. With the cooperation of Ukomics we will be handing this little number out for the first time at the London Film and Comic Con on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Big thanks to Stu!

Fallen Heroes 2 Page 1

Fallen Heroes 2 is underway – pages well on the way to Mr Gat Melvyn on the great South peninsula of Africa. With Unseen Shadows building up momentum Fallen Heroes 2 has to get ahead of itself in order to be prepared for the big launch later on this year. Will be trying to post up updates of Fallen Heroes regularly here on Thursdays along with any other Unseen Shadows updates.

Moon 2, Page 1 in Ink

Moon 2, page 1 as god intended her (all that's left is getting it as Iv intends her)

I remain excited at the prospect of being able to offer up the inks for Page 1, Issue 2 of Moon. This was a tester for me as we got back in the game to bring you the lunar shennanigans before. In my time off I was very clear in my mind as to what the drop points of the original were, not that anyone seemed to notice. The linework lacked the sharpness I was looking for and the clarity of composition I was hoping for. So I went in on 2 (and FH 2 – and even more so on Cy’s Reverend) with the intention to develop what had already been done without losing the tone of the original.

It can be difficult to develop within a series as the artwork shouldn’t change too dramatically from Page 1 to Page 150 frankly but when you’re in your early days – like I am – there’s a curve and it’d shortchange readers if you don’t follow that line. I’ve tried to hard to maintain the tone of Issue 1 but I hope Issue 2 proves sharper and cleaner, funnier and more engaging still than the original. If Issue 1 was the intro, this is now the proving ground. Here’s hoping we’re up to it.

All that’s left to do is send it over to Iv. She’ll do what she always does and blow it clean out of the water with deft application of creation-like colour work. We love Iv and I personally have to thank her for being so patient while waiting for pages. She’s a colour obsessed angel. The end results of her efforts’ll be posted here as soon as they’re back.

Semper procedens.

Moon’s back!! Page 1, Issue 2 Pencils!!

All those looking bereft at your copy of Issue 1 and all those afraid for the future of our hero following the cliffhanger of Issue 1, fear not – for Issue 2 is on its way. Page 1, Issue 2 is here to take a look at. As you can see – no much has changed in the life of Moon but it’s going to. Watch this space for more previews of Issue 2 (not too many though – as there’s some major spoilers on pretty much every page).

It’s just so damn good to be drawing him again.

Moon 2: Sketch post

One of my main worries about drawing several books at the same time is stylistic. Moon and Fallen Heroes look very different in style. My intention is that The Reverend will also be a little different as the focus on its central character sort of asks for a more naturalistic style. Just to brush off the cobwebs for each project I try to sketch the characters just to get them clear in my head again before they start going back onto the full page. Who am I telling? No one. Its not very interesting but frankly a picture with no blurb underneath looks well weird. With Iv and Gat waiting in the wings Moon and Fallen Heroes pages will begin to appear inevitably before the end of this week. Check back here Thursday for FH updates and Monday for more Moon.

Unseen Shadows: Creative Teams confirmed…

Getting back into the game I’m already playing catch up. Unseen Shadows is now well underway with pages already in for Stephanie Connisbee: Operation Solomon and Clancy Wallencheck: Band of Butchers. Scripts will be ready soon for Napoleon Stone and the Fragments of Fate. Cy finished Reverend: Wrath of God some time ago. Myself, Gat and Barry are agreed it can be done and if it is – then Wrath of God may well be our proving grounds.

We have a long way to go but we’ve got our driving caps on and the engine is revving. Check back here for updates every Thursday about progress on all Unseen Shadows and Fallen Heroes titles…. Cheers

The Reverend: Wrath of God by Cy Dethan, Steve Penfold and Gat Melvyn

Napoleon Stone and the Fragments of Fate by Pete Rogers and Roy Huteson Stewart

Stephanie Conisbee in Operation: Solomon by Richmond Clements & Conor Boyle

Clancy Wallencheck: Band of Butchers by Dan Thompson, Robert Carey and Vicky Stonebridge

Steve P returns to Beyond the Bunker. All hands to the lifeboats…

Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to drop away my involvement in Beyond the Bunker (not including MCM whicxh was an awesome success) and I’ve been trying to get back to the level of involvement I had before.

Mr D Thompson Esquire has handled things beautifully in recent weeks and held the Beyond the Bunker banner aloft with credibility and style that you would expect from a man that represents in so many ways the best elements of both man and lady (he can’t fight for love nor money but that rarely comes up). However, the pressure is now decidedly off him.

After an unfortunate hiatus in which I dealt with rampaging demon hordes and traveled to a distant Japanese monastery to practice the zen art of turning mere paper and computer pages into works of fine art and design, I have returned and quite frankly I can’t wait to start showing you what’s coming. With the enormous goliath that is the Unseen Shadows project being formed outside of your vision as we speak; which incorporates 4 central characters from the Fallen Heroes Universe into collected 1 shots, plus the veritable leviathan that is Moon 2 waiting quietly in the corner for launch at a soon to be announced date – much is going to take place in the coming weeks and I am proud to say that Beyond the Bunker is in the centre of it.

Now, partly due to recent events and partly because there is now longer no course of action left open to us, myself, Gat Melvyn and Iv Matilla are going to attempt something of a coup. Now, if I say its getting done – it’s done. I am no longer Steve Penfold, Bum Artist. I am Steve Penfold. Zen Pen Ninja, Fourth Dan. If you stand in the way you are gonna get covered in ink.

As the stunt rider says to the expectant white trash jail bait…

‘Watch this…’

Watch here over the next few weeks to see if I make good on my great big, grand plans. (I will).

To those who know who they are – I plan to make you proud. Even if it kills me.

Moon 2 underway

Finally, after an extended hiatus we can confirm as of next week Moon 2 preview pages will be available here on www.beyondthebunker.com. So to round things off here are a few further bits from Moon 1.

Moon 1 is still available here. Just click on Buy Moon 1 in the above menu and we’ll send you a copy (limited to the UK at present – sorry).

Destroy All Robots 1: Eve

Trading Card design introducing one of the characters from Destroy all Robots by Darrin Grimwood, a novel in which a disparate group of robots specialised for specific industries are pitched against each other in a televised fight to the wrecking yard on an isolated Island on the South China Sea. Completed in 2010, Darrin is currently pitching the idea in the US. More info is available at www.destroyallrobots.com.

Moon 1, Page 2 Linework

I’m back and I’m ready to get some high end work done. Trying hard to complete everything I can as quickly as I can (without affecting the quality). Currently working on the draft work and concept designs for all three titles; Moon 2, FH 2 and a neat little one-shot to be announced later on this week. I’m also developing a couple of scripts at present (egads! He’s going to try and write something) so keep an eye on that to see how I do…. ;-). That’s right – I did a smiley. Whatever man.

… and just to pep you up. Here’s the colour first panel from page 1 too. Just to remind you what the finished article looks like….

Okay. I get it. You’re getting bored of seeing replays of the existing book. Well, hopefully next week there’ll be something very new to see here….
