When Artists Collide: Moon line work to colour (Penfold to Matilla)

Ivanna Matilla enhanced massively the artwork in Moon 1 and is ready for more. Iv doesn’t need to work with us at this stage as she’s beginning to get the commissions she deserves. I was pleased to get good critiques on my pencil and ink work from comics editor for Clint Magazine, really great bloke with genuine interest in the scene – who even bought a copy of Moon to add to his collection. In many ways I’ve been aware since Iv’s reactions to some of my line work (constructive of course) that there was room for improvement and I’m stepping up for Issue 2 – you can see a style change and sharpening of the line work by the end of Moon 1, something that was confirmed by Frank Quitely as he flicked through his own copy.

Why Buy Moon?

Moon 1 is now available to buy from this site (click here). It is the first part of many more Moons to come. Your copy will be individually numbered and marked as a first edition pushing the value of the book up should great things take place in Moon’s future. It’s the first book from Beyond the Bunker; of which there are already more in the pipe line. Its the first published work for Dan Thompson and Steve Penfold (excluding Steve’s Fallen Heroes work (ahem)). Its the summation of 2 years hard graft. You would be supporting the British comic industry – something both myself and Dan are very proud of – though we do accept cheques in dollars – and kick starting a newby independent comics company that hopes to represent the sharp end of indy (and small press) comic books. Its high quality (printed by our mates at UKomics) and its kick ass wicked. Those are the reasons I can think of for buying Moon 1.

Aside from all that – its the tale of the Moon arriving on earth to defend the British isles, but discovering, due to a botched, drunken Celtic ceremony that he is cursed to walk the earth with a Moon for a head. Working his way up through history without eating, drinking, talking or emoting facially Moon now walks the streets of 21st Century facing threats the usual constabulary are ill-equipped to deal with! At night he returns to his place in the sky – defying laws of physics and basic astronomy before returning back in the morning to tackle the amassing hordes of weird. A comedy, a buddy cop tale, a gripping insight into what the Moon does when he’s not in the sky. Don’t look to the sky, look to the streets. Its Moon!!

BTB Classic: Caelum Priory 3

Caelum Priory was a sprawling battlefield drama set in the provincial future city state of Caelum Priory. Written by Thomas Boosz it sadly never managed to live up to its potential as the exhaustive nature and scale of it required an enormous amount of development work. Pages and pages of architecture, technology, character designs and weaponry and vehicles were generated. More so than for any project I’ve worked on before or since. Almost all of it (including pages of the book) were lost when a low standard hard drive took a slight knock and broke the pin that reads the information. According to the retailer it’ll cost £700 to retrieve any information from it. An enormous amount of work is still on it and it sits on the back of my desk in the blind hope that one day, before the technology becomes entirely redundant I’ll have the money to retrieve the data. Frankly folks, it’d be a treasure trove of old artwork – only a fraction of which I have available to post here without it. Still, its about the new and interesting, right?

BTB Classic: Caelum Priory 2

Caelum Priory was devised by Thomas Boosz and was started in 2005. It absorbed a lot of reference material and character design as it involved a very large set of troops – though focussing on maybe 6 or 7 central characters of varying ranks. The environment, weaponry, equipment, architecture and vehicles all had to be designed from scratch which is something I favoured as its nice to get broad scope on a project to design from the bottom up. It would be nice to revisit Caelum at some point though I’m not sure it’ll ever come back. It felt, after the development work, more like a sprawling free roaming battle sim (Medal of Honour style) than an ongoing comic book as much of the action was strategic. Thinking about it – I’d fully buy that game. It’d be amazing!
