Moon Launch 2: The Build-up

We are very quickly moving towards Moon Launch 2. Final touches to the book still need to be completed, extra material, colours, graphics, bit of lettering and effects but as soon as those are complete Moon Launch 2 is a go. Currently scouts are moving through the underbelly of central London, trying to find the perfect location for just such an event Music license, music equipment, fine bar, good atmosphere, reasonably priced alcohol and a door from which the good Moon fans can pick up their brand new spanking copy of Moon 2.

This is the point at which the pressure is greatest, as the finished product forms right in front of our disbelieving eyes. The strange things is seeing how these things develop as each layer is put on. From the first panel of Moon 1 to the last page of Moon 2, little has changed in terms of story, humour and style, but slight tweaks and improvements to Moon 2 mean that it will most likely be a much more slick affair. No typos for starters – though one was indentified in 1 that neither me nor Dan had ever noticed and that no fan has ever commented upon. First to write the typo in the comments below gets a free copy of Moon 2.

Moon 2: The News

Hello all!! Thanks for bearing with us as the almighty engineering process that is Moon 2. Ivanna Matilla – colourist to the gods – continues to complete the pages in pencil and ink. Once completed they are coming back here to Bunker Central to be finished – and we are well passed the half way mark. Stu at Ukomics waits like a coiled spring with an orange cap on and will put Moon 2 to print as soon as it comes in. So to clarify, the final colours will soon be in – lettering has begun. As soon as that’s completed it’s going straight to print.

We understand it’s been a hell of a wait for Moon 2 and we’re confident that it’ll be worth the wait – with major reveals, major plot moments and dramatic changes ol’ Moon Head. Everything you understood in Issue 1 may change – or will it? Frankly, it depends on how much you understood.

Much discussion has taken place at the various cons we have attended regarding the physics of bringing a Moon down to Earth. To that we say this; this will be firmly dealt with in Moon 2. We know who is responsible for all this and we are finding them. We here at Beyond the Bunker know that the truth must now be revealed. It’s very simple as you will find out…

Also – following Kapow and MCM we can confirm what we told many who came to see us (so many in fact we sold out on the first full day of MCM) that with the completion of Moon 2 preparations will begin for Moon Launch 2. Following the success of Moon Launch 1 and frankly the strength of the pun it seems inevitable. We will be looking at booking a venue in London town (as central as possible to ease the journeys of those not in the capital), throw in some comedy and musical acts – from our extensive contacts we accidentally picked up while doing stand up and artwork – charge a nominal fee at the door with which you will receive a copy of Moon 2 – numbered, signed and hopefully with an alternative cover – or a signed Moon 1 to anyone new to Moon! So determined are we that this will take place that I spent part of my Bank Holiday Monday trying to complete a logo for the new Moon Launch.

We’re not showing you much of Moon 2 we admit – it’s a precarious balance between giving you all something to look forward to and giving away the plot – but there are great movements in the life of Moon – more perhaps than you’d expect. Enough, even to put him off of Coke Floats.

Will he be afraid of Coca Cola and Ice Cream? Will the events of Moon 2 change everything about the life of our hero? Yes, yes is the answer. Everything you know about Moon is open target in the rip-roaring new Moon book. Crazy Shennanigans!!

Who are the Agency? What happens to Ray? Why is Shades Rodriguez rowing with that woman? Where is Agent Seven? Who sent the Bingo Moles into battle? Who shot Councillor Hugh Griffiths? All this and more in the upcoming edition of Moon!

Diary of a bum artist 01.05.12 : C'mon Moon 2!!

We continue to work solidly on the second issue of moon 2. Moving (very swiftly) towards the last pages now, iv is doing all she can to complete the colour work on the second edition of our semi-orbital hero.

It’s been a long while now and I can only apologise profusely to all those who are waiting so patiently for the second edition of Moon. Rest assured, that while there have been delays we are sincerely working as hard and fast as we possibly can to get it completed.

In the back of my mind, particularly because of the length of time it has been between issues I am not prepared to put out anything less than an excellent issue. Those who have supported us, and Dan, and Iv for all her hard work deserve to see the best outing (of two) for Moon there has ever been.

Moon is out benchmark, Moon feels like our way out of the amateur field (much as we love it) and present ourselves as the professionals we want to be.

Course, being a professional means finishing the damn book so I’m lacking slightly in that respect. I’d like to point out that danno completed the script for the first volume of moon 2 years ago so frankly he deserves an award for patience beyond the ken of icici.

It’s coming!!! – and by Jove it’ll be awesome if it kills me.

Moon 2 colour tests

This week a look at the background work going on on Moon 2. There is a considerable amount of back and forth between the art department (read: Myself and Ivanna Matilla) about how to approach each scene with possible outcomes having to be balanced between what the story asks for, what we’re trying to achieve and bottom line; what looks cool. Continuing the palette from Moon 1 of course but the situation has worsened considerably for our adventurers. How do you colour that.

Iv is an incredibly reactive and quick colourist and rather than stooping to conquer, she stoops to colour and we’re eternally grateful for her input on this project. She certainly keeps me on my toes to the point where to question anything she does feels highly presumptive and frankly stepping above my station. Not because of her of course. She’s an upbeat delight. However, her sheer talent is enough to keep us on our toes.

The marking hasn’t gone on this one though. Any doubt is swiftly queried with the sure hand of a teacher (as you’d expect from Iv as an English teacher just outside Buenos Aires). On my Iphone, I keep the digital clocks for Buenos Aires and Cape Town (to keep track of things when I’m working with Fallen Heroes / Tales of the Fallen colourist Gat Melvyn) and although Buenos Aires is two hours behind, Ivanna Matilla is years ahead of the rest of us.

A genuine pleasure to work with.

Moon 2, Page 1 in Ink

Moon 2, page 1 as god intended her (all that's left is getting it as Iv intends her)

I remain excited at the prospect of being able to offer up the inks for Page 1, Issue 2 of Moon. This was a tester for me as we got back in the game to bring you the lunar shennanigans before. In my time off I was very clear in my mind as to what the drop points of the original were, not that anyone seemed to notice. The linework lacked the sharpness I was looking for and the clarity of composition I was hoping for. So I went in on 2 (and FH 2 – and even more so on Cy’s Reverend) with the intention to develop what had already been done without losing the tone of the original.

It can be difficult to develop within a series as the artwork shouldn’t change too dramatically from Page 1 to Page 150 frankly but when you’re in your early days – like I am – there’s a curve and it’d shortchange readers if you don’t follow that line. I’ve tried to hard to maintain the tone of Issue 1 but I hope Issue 2 proves sharper and cleaner, funnier and more engaging still than the original. If Issue 1 was the intro, this is now the proving ground. Here’s hoping we’re up to it.

All that’s left to do is send it over to Iv. She’ll do what she always does and blow it clean out of the water with deft application of creation-like colour work. We love Iv and I personally have to thank her for being so patient while waiting for pages. She’s a colour obsessed angel. The end results of her efforts’ll be posted here as soon as they’re back.

Semper procedens.

Moon’s back!! Page 1, Issue 2 Pencils!!

All those looking bereft at your copy of Issue 1 and all those afraid for the future of our hero following the cliffhanger of Issue 1, fear not – for Issue 2 is on its way. Page 1, Issue 2 is here to take a look at. As you can see – no much has changed in the life of Moon but it’s going to. Watch this space for more previews of Issue 2 (not too many though – as there’s some major spoilers on pretty much every page).

It’s just so damn good to be drawing him again.

Moon 2: Sketch post

One of my main worries about drawing several books at the same time is stylistic. Moon and Fallen Heroes look very different in style. My intention is that The Reverend will also be a little different as the focus on its central character sort of asks for a more naturalistic style. Just to brush off the cobwebs for each project I try to sketch the characters just to get them clear in my head again before they start going back onto the full page. Who am I telling? No one. Its not very interesting but frankly a picture with no blurb underneath looks well weird. With Iv and Gat waiting in the wings Moon and Fallen Heroes pages will begin to appear inevitably before the end of this week. Check back here Thursday for FH updates and Monday for more Moon.

Moon 2 underway

Finally, after an extended hiatus we can confirm as of next week Moon 2 preview pages will be available here on www.beyondthebunker.com. So to round things off here are a few further bits from Moon 1.

Moon 1 is still available here. Just click on Buy Moon 1 in the above menu and we’ll send you a copy (limited to the UK at present – sorry).

New Moon Preview!!

A Moon’s gotta eat – and there’s little or nothing that satisfies the cold, hard hunger of a hard working satellite than a meaty, grease drippin’ burger and a Coke Float. The Steak house that likes to say ‘more fries with that!’ New on the Menu this month: Whole Onion in Batter and Triangle Fries! No need to go on a tangent ‘cos Isoceles crazy triangular fries and they go straight to my angles!! Whatever – coat your throat with a mega do-over burger – its like three burgers in a drippy bun!
