Dropping Science: Want To See A Dam Explode?
The Condit Dam has sat happily on the White Salmon river in Washington for nearly 100 years. Sadly though, the old workhorse has become vastly outdated compared to modern dams and the company that owns the facility recently decided that it was simply too expensive to remain operational. This is very sad for fans of massive concrete water retainers, but fantastic news for fans of stuff blowing up.
After engineers planted explosives throughout the dam, National Geographic settled in with a set of time-lapse cameras and watched as the entire reservoir drained in just 2 hours. The rest of the dam will now be taken down and the river returned to its natural state.
